This film eloquently captures the personalities of the artists at Project Onward. The combination of artist interviews, shots of the artists at work, and explanation by the program director creates a strong connection between the viewer and the artists.
I hope that Ilana and I are able to make this same bond in our work, as we reveal the lives and stories of Uptown. We have been working hard to develop our own sense of the people and and to accurately portray them in photography and writing. As the summer begins, we plan on playing with film, as yet another medium with which to tell these stories. For this portion of the project, we will be moving outside of Mercy Housing (where we have been focusing all of our energy these past few months) to the rest of the Uptown community. This will allow us to more accurately understand Uptown and the stories of the people involved in never-ending conflict over housing.
On The Real Film’s Video Portrait: Project Onward
Chicago-based film production company On The Real Film creates another fascinating video portrait that brings awareness to an amazing organization, Project Onward. Project Onward serves as a studio program for artists 18 and older living with mental and/or developmental disabilities. By providing the work space, art materials, guidance, and sales opportunities, Project Onward does more then just provide the tools to create art. Project Onward gives confidence, pride, and self worth to these talented individuals. Artists of Project Onward are able to interact with buyers and see their work come to life on display.

louvre in Lens.
I recently had the opportunity to help my friend Kurt Chiang in his latest venture as writer/performer at The Neo-Futurist Theater with the production “ANALOG”. I produced a set of drawings of each of the United States Presidents to be included in the installation which accompanies the play. Andrew Mortazavi covered the installation and interviewed Kurt in an article this week on Sixty Inches From Center, a Chicago based arts blog/archive (which includes a few of my photos of the installation). The play runs through April 6th, and if you are in the area I seriously recommend seeing the show. Being totally objective - it is intense, dark, humorous, full of stellar performances by the ensemble, and basically - it’s fucking awesome. So go check it out.
If you’re still not convinced, check out Andrew’s article here - http://sixtyinchesfromcenter.org/archive/?p=19234
OnTheRealFilm presents - HARVEY MOON : A PORTRAIT
New media artist Harvey Moon is a creator of tools and machines. Moon’s project ‘Delta’ is the latest in his line of drawing machines which transform the artist’s conception into a physical drawing using custom fabricated electronics and generative algorithms. ‘Delta’ takes the drawing machine concept to a new dimension. Moon was commissioned to produce an automatic typewriter which would continuously type on the page. Both ‘Delta’ and The Automatic Typewriter were unveiled at the School of the Art Institute’s Bachelors of Fine Arts Spring 2013 Showcase.
